- Résumé :
- Youth experiencing psychosis who live in rural communities face increased risks. Rural youth are often disadvantaged by virtue of their age and the geographical context in which they live. They face significant barriers to equitable and appropriate primary health care, and particularly specialized mental health care. This research will address issues of access to (mental) health care by generating new knowledge about help-seeking by youth who have experienced a first episode of psychosis in a rural community. The project uses digital storytelling, an innovative arts-based research methodology. We examine rural youth help-seeking behaviours and seek to understand how we might best support youth at home, school, and community, and inform practices in youth (mental) health, education and welfare service settings. The project uses a unique participatory qualitative arts-based method - digital storytelling - to address barriers to accessing services and to explore how participatory arts-based health research contributes to youth engagement and social competencies. Because lack of engagement and social isolation are a central issue for youth seeking help in the context of first episode psychosis, the innovative methods used in this study have the potential to increase youth involvement in research and contribute to the evidence base that will influence their care.
