Abstract/Summary:
There has been an increase in the number of Canadian young adults who vape, including those of childbearing age and may continue to vape during their pregnancy. Previous studies have reported that vaping during pregnancy is becoming popular, especially as a way to help women quit smoking cigarettes. Recent studies suggest that vaping during pregnancy may be harmful for the developing baby and it's placenta. This research project will collect information on how common vaping in pregnancy is in Canada, pregnant individuals vaping habits, including types of products and the added content such as nicotine, why individuals vape during their pregnancy, and what support they received or wanted to receive to help them stop vaping. Additionally, to understand the health effects of vaping on the baby's development, we will collect placentas from individuals who report vaping during pregnancy to compare with placentas from individuals who did not vape and those who use traditional cigarettes. The placenta is known as the organ of pregnancy. It is responsible for passing nutrients from the gestational parent to the baby and protects the baby from harm throughout pregnancy. We will compare the effect of vaping on placental health and baby's growth during pregnancy. These will be the first studies to provide detail on vaping behaviours during pregnancy and human data on the effects of vaping on baby development. Working with the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada, we will put together information packages for health care providers (doctors) and pregnant individuals who vape, to make sure decisions being made during pregnancy keep the gestational parent and developing baby safe.
