- Résumé :
- Adolescence is a time of major physical, emotional, and social growth. Sexual exploration and discovery are normal parts of healthy adolescent development. By age 19, over half of Canadians have had sexual intercourse. Part of sexual exploration may include several risks such as unplanned pregnancies, sexually-transmitted infections, and exposure to dating or media-based sexual violence (pornography). An early start to sexual activity, usually defined as having had first sex before age 15, is also associated with greater vulnerability to negative sexual health outcomes. Using youth-led participatory action research methods, this project aims to improve our understanding of the relationship between screen use (TV or digital media, video games, electronic learning, and video-chatting time) and sexual health attitudes, behaviours, and risks in adolescence to build evidence for future youth-targeted interventions promoting healthy sexual development. We will determine if childhood and adolescent screen type and duration of use is associated with early age of initiation of sexual intercourse among healthy Canadian youth. This study will be embedded in a large ongoing long-term Canadian primary care practice-based research network called The Applied Research Group for Kids (TARGet Kids!) and build on previously collected data on screen use. Our outcomes will be evaluated in adolescents (13-18 years) using a new self-administered confidential sexual health attitudes and experiences questionnaire co-designed with youth. It will ask adolescents about their social environment, sexual health knowledge and attitudes, sexual experiences, and key behaviours including contraception use, sexting, exposure to sexually explicit websites, and dating violence. This information will help us to answer important questions on the effects of early childhood screen use on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and promote healthy sexuality and mitigate risky behaviour in adolescence.
