CIHR is composed of thirteen "virtual" institutes, each of which is focused on a specific area in the broad field of health research. Most CIHR approved grants and awards are associated with an institute.

CIHR has classified health research into four research themes, also referred to as pillars of research. Most CIHR approved grants and awards are identified with a theme, while some are not (e.g. Equipment Grants).
